Position: Staff Sergeant – Support Services 

Term: Permanent Full-time 

Salary/Pay: As per Approved Salary Grid by UCCM Police Services Commission 

The Staff Sergeant – Support Services is responsible for directing the operations and administrative functions of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and to ensure that responsibilities assigned by the Deputy Chief are complied with, and that accountability is provided to not only the Deputy Chief, but all staff members of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and the member First Nations. The Staff Sergeant – Support Services also provides supervision, leadership and advice to members assigned to their command during the process of investigations. The Staff Sergeant – Support Services ensures benchmark crimes are thoroughly investigated according to policy, and the Sergeants and Officers have the required support to meet the needs of a successful criminal prosecution. This position works both in consultation with the supervisory team and independently. 

Your duties will include (but are not limited to): 

  • Promote professional conduct by members, being sensitive to the cultural and traditional needs of the UCCMM First Nation communities and community members in all types of investigations; Sensitive to the needs of community members when dealing with varying types of incidents 
  • Ensure effective enforcement of Federal, Provincial and First Nation laws within the UCCM police service area, consistent with organizational goals 
  • Supervise sergeants and detective sergeants by assigning and monitoring tasks, assisting them to establish plans and objectives in their work; establishing work priorities, setting deadlines for completion of work assignments and adjusting to changing priorities 
  • Remain current with police issues/concerns, and coordinate or conduct in-service training topics in areas of criminal law, current trends, new legislation, and new policing techniques 
  • Conduct quality control and maintenance inspections as developed by the Service 
  • Act as liaison with case investigators, Office of the Crown Attorney, the Courts, and other Police Services as required 
  • Investigate crimes and offences against statues, apprehends and arrests suspects using the means necessary and justified in law to protect officers and the public 
  • Provide adequate support for investigating code of conduct allegations and provide specialized support to all staff as required 
  • In consultation with the Deputy Chief performs supervision, administrative, operational and managerial duties related to the staff while overseeing training personnel evaluation and overall personnel compliance with policies and procedures 
  • Create effective relationships with all enforcement agencies that support efforts to reduce use and minimize negative impacts within the community 
  • Other duties as maybe assigned/required 

Your education and experience: 

  • Must possess Ontario Police College Basic Constable Training course (or equivalency); 
  • Must hold rank of Sergeant; Holding rank of Staff Sergeant is considered an asset; 
  • Completion/ willingness to complete Ontario Police College Staff Sergeant Exam; 
  • Senior OPC courses: Major Case Management, Search Warrant, Drug Investigation, are considered an asset; 
  • Availability for on call evenings and weekends as required; 
  • No current discipline issues, or internal investigations outstanding
