Introduction to the
FNCPA Leadership Development Compass
The FNCPA Leadership Development Compass is a comprehensive leadership development ecosystem designed to support First Nations police leaders throughout every stage of their leadership journey with a focus on preparing the next generation of Chiefs of First Nations police.
Recognizing that exceptional leadership is built through experience, meaningful relationships, continuous learning, and practical guidance, the Compass provides an integrated approach to developing current and future First Nations Chiefs of Police. It is also a tool that will support emerging First Nations police leaders in their journey and police Board and Commission members in their governance role and responsibilities.
As such, the Compass is designed for:
- Emerging First Nations police leaders interested in becoming a Chief
- Newly appointed First Nations Police Chiefs
- Experienced Chiefs for continuous learning
- Board and Commission members learning about the Chief’s role and responsibilities
It is understood that every Chief's transition journey is unique. There is no single pathway to becoming an effective First Nations Chief of Police.
Each pathway brings different strengths, perspectives, relationships, and challenges. Rather than prescribing a single sequence of learning, the New Chief Transition Program is designed as a flexible, practical leadership development resources that Chiefs and aspiring Chiefs can access at the moments they need it most. It provides guidance, tools, mentorship opportunities, and practical resources that support successful transitions while recognizing the diversity of First Nations policing environments and leadership journeys.
The Compass is built around three complementary components that work together to support leadership excellence:
